Portuguese Prime Minister: Fiscal and Economic Performance Continues to Outperform the EU Average
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro recently stated that Portugal’s current economic and fiscal performance ranks among the strongest in the European Union, arguing that the country’s growing fiscal stability has become an increasingly important factor in attracting investment.
Speaking at the presentation of the Aljustrel mining investment project, he noted that “Portugal’s economic situation is more favourable than the European Union average.”
Fiscal Stability Becomes a Key Competitive Advantage
Montenegro emphasised that Portugal’s current fiscal position is “one that many European countries would envy.”
Over the past several years, Portugal has steadily improved its public finances. According to previously published government data, the country has recorded consecutive budget surpluses while gradually reducing public debt as a percentage of GDP.
At a time when many European countries continue to face fiscal deficits and debt-related challenges, Portugal’s fiscal performance is increasingly viewed as an important pillar of its economic stability.
Major Investment Projects Continue to Move Forward
The remarks were made during the presentation of the Aljustrel mining project, which is expected to attract approximately €400 million in investment and is regarded as one of the most significant projects in Portugal’s energy and resource sectors.
Analysts believe that Portugal’s stable fiscal environment, continued economic growth, and support from European Union funding programmes are helping the country attract increasing levels of international investment.
Although Portugal is not among the fastest-growing economies in the EU, it has distinguished itself in recent years through fiscal discipline, debt reduction, and investment attractiveness. For international investors, economic stability is often more valuable than short-term rapid growth, and this remains one of the key reasons Portugal continues to attract growing market attention.
