Portugal Enters the World’s Top 30 Wealthiest Countries
The UBS Global Wealth Report 2026 shows that Portugal has delivered an impressive performance in global wealth rankings, successfully entering the list of the world’s 30 wealthiest countries.
According to the report, Portugal ranks 26th globally in household wealth, with average wealth per adult reaching approximately €170,000 (around US$195,761). Median wealth per adult also performed strongly, reaching about €67,000 and placing Portugal among the leading countries worldwide.
Notably, Portugal’s wealth level has surpassed that of some countries traditionally perceived as wealthier. In terms of average wealth per adult, Portugal ranks ahead of the United Arab Emirates. Compared with Greece, Portugal’s average wealth per adult stands at US$195,761, while Greece records US$143,343.
The report also highlights that Portuguese residents have a relatively stable wealth structure, with 37% of their wealth held in financial assets — higher than Greece (36.1%) and Spain (31.2%).
More Balanced Wealth Distribution
One of the key findings of the UBS report is that Portugal’s rankings for average wealth per adult and median wealth per adult are closely aligned. This indicates that wealth in the country is not highly concentrated among a small elite group, but is distributed relatively evenly across different social groups.
Compared with economies where wealth is more concentrated, a significant proportion of Portuguese households hold considerable assets. According to UBS’s assessment using the wealth Gini coefficient, Portugal performs well in terms of wealth equality, ranking ahead of countries such as the UAE, the United States, Sweden and Switzerland.
The Number of Millionaires Continues to Grow
The UBS report also shows that the number of US dollar millionaires worldwide continues to rise. In 2025, the global millionaire population increased by approximately 1.5%, adding around one million new millionaires — equivalent to more than 2,680 new millionaires every day.
Among the 56 markets analyzed, none recorded a decline in the number of millionaires by the end of 2025 compared with the beginning of the year.
Based on data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United Nations, the World Bank Group, and national statistical agencies, UBS estimates that Portugal currently has around 181,000 US dollar millionaires.
Overall, Portugal has not only secured a place among the world’s leading countries in terms of wealth, but also demonstrates a stable asset structure and relatively balanced wealth distribution, making its performance within Europe particularly noteworthy.
