ECB Annual Forum Opens in Portugal, with Artificial Intelligence Taking Centre Stage in Europe's Growth Agenda
The European Central Bank (ECB) Annual Forum has officially opened in Sintra, Portugal, bringing together central bank governors, policymakers, economists, and academics from around the world to discuss Europe’s economic growth, innovation, and financial stability.
Now in its 13th edition, the ECB Forum on Central Banking has become one of the world’s leading gatherings on monetary policy and economic affairs. The three-day event is hosted by ECB President Christine Lagarde, who joins fellow central bank leaders in examining the outlook for the global economy.
This year’s forum focuses on how innovation can drive Europe’s future growth, with artificial intelligence (AI) emerging as one of the conference’s central themes. Participants widely agree that AI, digital transformation, and technological innovation will play a crucial role in improving Europe’s productivity and strengthening its global competitiveness.
Several research papers presented during the forum suggest that much of the productivity gap between Europe and the United States can be attributed to differences in digital industries and technological innovation. At the same time, topics such as immigration, high-quality regulation, and capital investment have also been identified as key drivers of Europe’s long-term economic development.
Alongside representatives from the ECB, officials from the Bank of England, the Bank of Canada, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are also participating in the discussions. Aaron Chatterji, Chief Economist at OpenAI, has been invited to join a dedicated session on artificial intelligence, highlighting the growing importance of emerging technologies in central banking and economic policymaking.
Analysts regard the Sintra Forum as one of the most closely watched events for assessing the future direction of global monetary policy. As the world continues to face challenges including inflation, geopolitical tensions, and evolving trade dynamics, the policy signals and economic perspectives emerging from this year’s forum are expected to attract significant attention from international financial markets.
For Portugal, hosting the ECB Annual Forum for more than a decade has further strengthened Sintra’s profile as an international financial meeting venue and reinforced the country’s position as an important host of high-level economic and policy events in Europe.
